During the 17th century in Southeast Asia, thousands of seafarers traded between the southern ports of China and those of Southeast Asia, particularly Malacca, Penang and Singapore. In time, many of these men took non-Muslim natives of Malaysia archipelago as wives. The offsprings of these marriages created a close-knit community which came to be called the Babas (also known Straits Chinese or Peranakan). Throughout the centuries, Baba culture has managed to maintain many ancient Chinese traditions while adopting many customs of the land they settled in such as Malay, Portugese, Dutch, British and Indonesian.
